Join us on March 2nd for a throwback first Thursday when will screen Texas Filmmakers Showcase films from the year 2000 and before. In fact we are going one full decade back to 1996 on this one. Remember the Macarena?! Yeah, that was 1996. But some excellent short films were made in the late 90s and we're going to show them. See you at Dean's! Death and A Salesman (8:56 min., 1996)
After buying airtime on a local radio station, used car salesman Jack Howard realizes he couldn't sell a car to save his life. Last Cigarette (10:35 min., 2000)
A young man tries to quit smoking. In an ironic twist of fate, smoking saves his life. No Fair, You're Dead (7:00 min., 1996)
An absurd view of war is revealed to be from the imagination of a young boy on his birthday. RoadHead (14:00 min., 1999)
RoadHead is a digitally animated documentary short. Filmmakers Bob Sabiston and Tommy Pallotta drove last December from New York to Austin and documented their trip. A series of random people encountered on the road were interviewed, edited, and then animated. A group of twelve artists donated their time and talent to animate the film, using Sabiston's proprietary software. The film capitalizes on the diversity of the artists' styles - each animator was allowed to illustrate the interview subjects in whatever manner they chose. The result is a chaotic, visually arresting series of cartoon portraits. R & R (9:00 min., 1997)
A soldier visits his best friend's wife on R & R and learns not all casualties of the Vietnam war are soldiers. Based on a true story. What's Got Into Me? (10:00 min., 1997)
Wanda is afraid of carrots and of and her sister, Olga. If wanda shared her secret maybe she'd feel more comfortable with her sister. But how can Wanda tell Olga what's got into her? It's not exactly a tasteful topic of conversation... |
